How to care for your fashion valuables

Usually before I make a big fashion purchase I’ll agonize for days or weeks about it. Then I’ll wear the bag, shoes, jewelry – or whatever in question – a few times, being very careful about keeping said item in pristine condition. Not too long after the item I so agonized over getting will end up getting mistreated in some way or another – I’ll stuff it carelessly in my closet, accidentally bend it, get body lotion on it… I’m so careless after the first few wears of pretty much any item!

A big part of that is because instead of one big, organized closet I have a bunch of small messy ones. You can’t open any of them without at least a few things falling out. I’m trying to find a time to work on that!! In the meantime I asked Thumbtack personal stylists and owners of The Re-Stylists, Beckie Klein + Martina Gordon, to at least give some advice on proper care (hopefully I can keep these tips in mind when I finally settle on wedding accessories!).

Take Care of your designer shoes

  1. GET THEM RE-SOLED

Most well made shoes come with leather soles, which aren’t made for walking on anything rougher than carpet. According to the shoe repair guys at Jim’s in NYC, after the initial scratches and normal wear and tear, there is actually a point of no return when the sole is so badly damaged, no amount of repair and re-soling will being them back to life.

  1. GET WORN OUT HEEL TAPS REPLACED ASAP

The same applies to the heels. Nothing destroys a shoe faster than being reckless with the heels. Aside from the obvious avoidance of cracks and grates in side walks, pay attention to your taps and regularly replace. Once the tabs are worn down to a nub and, God forbid, gone, you start treading on the heel itself an the end is near.

3.STAIN AND RAIN–PROOF YOUR SHOES

spray-on water repellent is an essential, fool-proof way to safeguard against the elements.

  1. STORE PROPERLY

A quality shoe tree is a worthwhile investment. Unfinished cedar is best, because it sponges up moisture and unpleasant odors.

Take Care of your Costume Jewelry

  1. GIVE IT A BREAK

Don’t wear it everyday. Take it off before bed.

  1. STORE IT IN BAGS

This reduces risk of being scratched by other pieces of jewelry.

  1. KEEP IT CLEAN AND DRY

Clean after wearing with a soft cloth and never wear in the water. Metals like brass, copper or bronze will oxidize and see their color changing. silver or gold platings will chip.

Take Care of your Designer Bags

1   Stash your bag in its original dust cover

2   Keep in a clean and dry environment

3   Fill it with stuffing when not in use to maintain shape

4   Never carry loose pens or makeup in your bag without using the bag liner

Rotation is key!
