How To Make Your Old Bags New: I Sent My bag to Purse Rehab in Malibu and she is better than ever!

Hermes Kelly Purse Rehab

I love my bags and I take good care of them but I don’t baby them. I also don’t believe in keeping plastic on the hardware (it actually will damage your bags as condensation gets beneath the plastic and will rust your hardware- I’ve seen it happen to a girlfriend!). I mean, I try to take care of them the best I can but it’s hard with my travel and work schedule along with daily hands on mommy duties! I do keep my bags in their dust-covers (if I can find them 😂) and use a leather cleaner if I spill pasta sauce or wine but that’s about it. Besides, I don’t mind a beat up looking bag as I think it shows that it’s been well loved! But when my bags start falling apart, I get worried.

In June of this year, I discovered Purse Rehab— a rehab for old broken bags in Malibu and they offered to treat my beloved vintage Hermes Kelly bag circa 1972 for review. I hesitated because this is a very old bag and I didn’t know how it would react to an overhaul. It was literally falling apart (as you can see in the photo below, the handle was about to split, the leather cracked and the edges completely destroyed by all the times I spent “loving” on it) and I was very concerned, intervention was definitely in order. I also thought about sending it to Hermes but the last time they refurbished a bag for me it took almost a year (worth the wait by the way), but I wanted to carry this navy and white kelly bag NOW because it’s my summer favorite!

I did extensive research before sending my bag to Purse Rehab (I love the idea that I sent my bag to a rehab in Malibu!) and when I was in Malibu for the 4th of July, I decided to go for it. The transaction could not have been more smooth and reassuring. Natasha, the co-founder and director of operations, and I must have emailed dozens of times to reassure me my baby will be good as new (or better!) within weeks. Less than 17 days later, I received word that my beloved Kelly was ready. Being the impatient person I am, I asked to see photos and was shocked that this was the same bag!

When it arrived a few days later, I gasped and jumped with joy. I thought I had to lay this beautiful old Kelly bag down to rest considering how ancient she was! I have no idea how Purse Rehab worked this miracle but I can safely say I will trust them with all my bags in the future (this is not a paid sponsored post by the way- merely a public service one!).

Snobs, if you have any bags that need to check into rehab, whether they’re just in need of a slight tune up,  as bad as condition as mine or even worse, email Natasha at natasha@purserehab.com.

AFTER:

I am posting the after photos first because my bag is just so gorgeous now! I would think this is a new 2017 bag given how shiny and pretty she is! Wait til you see the after photos below!

About Purse Rehab as told to me by Natasha: Levon Akopyan is a third-generation cobbler and started his training at age 15 working for his father who’s idea it was to open in Malibu. I started off as Levon’s customer 8 years ago and became good friends over the years. I first met Levon when I brought in a Balenciaga bag that got destroyed in the rain and I was on the verge of throwing it out. He was able to bring my bag back to life and that was the beginning of our friendship. Over the years of moving around, I still continued to mail my things to Levon for repair. I always had a love for fashion and design. I helped design clothing for Plain White T’s first tour when I was 15 years old and being creative never left me. Moving back to California from the east coast a few years ago, I was searching to do something I was really passionate about.  Thats when Levon came to me with his idea and that’s when Purse Rehab evolved into the business it is today.

Purserehab.com  is an online luxury repair service that gives customers the convenience of sending in their handbag from anywhere in the world. The website allows them to choose from several treatment packages and receive quotes for specific repairs. Once they purchase their package, they mail their purse directly into Purse Rehab for repairs. We ensure our customer experience is exceptional from the first click, all the way through purse delivery.  We make sure our clients are informed of the process every step of the way, from the time we receive their order until it’s ready to be shipped- offering free shipping and assurance that their handbag will be delivered as expected. For added convenience, we offer local pick up and delivery.  Purse Rehab is about bringing the old world craft to the 21st century without losing the high-tech experience! We want our customers to love their purse like the day they bought it and we take pride in seeing them use their bags for many seasons to come.

Treatments take approximately 2-3 weeks depending on the type of package purchased. We repair (tears/rips, stains, broken zippers, broken handles, missing hardware,  damaged lining, ripped pipping, scratched hardware etc.), as well as repair shoes and all things leather, canvas and fabric (luggage, briefcases, keychains, wallets etc.

We are located in Malibu, CA and also have a business called European Shoe Repair. European Shoe Repair isn’t just a place to get things repaired, it has become a local hangout for the Malibu community. With over 28 years in business and customers spanning nationwide, Levon wanted to create an easy and convenient way for clients to send in their handbags for repairs and care, hence the birth of Purse Rehab!

BEFORE:

Cracked leather, marks and stains on front of bag due to my sticker phase and the edges completely worn. Handle was about to detach as well!

Tina- I have an old white Gucci that is in great shape other than the leather has yellowed. Is there a fix?

OMG Tina! I wish I knew about this when I lived in LA just months ago. I would’ve gone straight over. My vintage Chanel needs repair. The strap broke off and the piping is worn down, but I haven’t trusted anyone enough to fix it. I’ll have to reach out to them and ship it in. Thanks so much for sharing this!!

    Xo,

Awesome result. I will use them from now on.
unfortunately I had a horrible experience. I sent my like new Prada gaufre for re-dying into purple to Tulsa leather care (I saw great reviews on their site, stupid me),. not only have they applied wrong dye and it came back sticky with un-dyed parts 4 months later but also they never returned the bag and stopped responding after another 4 months. how it’s even possible – to destroy $700 bag in excellent condition and go missing in action while having the bag in possession?
