It drives me crazy that they put protein powder in everything they make at most gym food/smoothie bars. You can always taste the powder no matter if it’s a shake or a muffin and powders are almost always high in calories, hidden sugars, and chemical fillers. Protein IS important after a workout, even for women (many think it’s just for bodybuilding, however, it’s essential for developing lean muscle as well), but there are so many better ways to get it. And I’m not talking about drinking egg whites… (ew).
Superfood is a word very casually thrown around these days, but there are a few brands that are making products that live up to that esoteric word. What I love about “real” superfoods is that they’re so easy to sprinkle into my muffin and smoothie batter and unlike protein powders they’re usually not super high in calories and sugar and don’t have a bad taste (they actually taste good!). Plus they don’t have fillers (at least not the below brands).
The first brand I’m obsessed with is Yourlixir. Their superfoods are sourced straight from the farm and come in both larger as well as smaller single-serve packets. I’ve been following F-Factor for a few years now and the main idea is to eat fiber and protein at every meal, which is why I love Yourlixir’s protein-rich spirulina. The only ingredient here is pure spirulina powder (out of the 1.5 gram serving, 1 gram is protein). Have you ever seen what’s in most protein powders? Usually a long list of ingredients you’ve never heard of. The line also includes Turmeric, Matcha, Maca, and Activated Charcoal. Everything they make is filler-free
Here’s how I use spirulina powder. I make my own GG-based muffins. I mix in a blender 6 GGs, 6 egg whites, cinnamon to taste, strawberries, and spirulina powder then bake the mix. The resulting muffins don’t look tasty, but they are! And they’re insanely filling and protein/fiber-packed – perfect after a workout.
Making balls out of dates, nuts, and spirulina is also delicious and perfect to sooth a sweet tooth.
If you’re not looking for 100% pure single superfoods, checkout Dope Naturally. The line is organic with no added sugar or flavors. The above, for example, is made only with organic beets, cacao, baobab, and mangosteen. Again, these powders are so easy to add into just about anything from smoothies to lattes to baked goods for snacks or meals that are both filling and healthy.
Lastly, Navitas Organics. They’re pretty much the OG in the space and their line is ever expanding. I love their raw cacao and acai powders and I eat their on-the-go power snacks all the time when I don’t have time to make something GG-based. Note however that these aren’t always low in calories, but they’re made with nourishing, clean ingredients and are very filling.
