I couldn’t even begin to count the number of memories I made in junior high in the '80s listening to Prince's music. Not many know this, but aside from his own songs, he also wrote hits for the likes of Chaka Khan (“I Feel for You”), The Bangles (“Manic Monday” - Yup! That was him), and Sinead O’Connor (“Nothing Compares 2 You” - a personal favorite). Prince was one of the best musicians of our time, and his personal life was just as inspiring; he credits childhood bullies as the reason he turned to music (If they weren't so mean to him, I would thank them!). So, yes, this is a sappy tribute to one of my all-time favorite artists, a man we lost much, much too soon.

There are seemingly endless incarnations of the Jimmy Choo Candy clutch. The dense little acrylic box has been adorned with images ranging from an icy cocktail to glowing graffiti spelling the word “yes” to the Union Jack flag, just to name a few. But this latest trumps them all when it comes to coolness. Depending on how you look at the clutch (printed on a lenticular lens), the oversized ’80s-inspired eye opens wide and closes shut.

I’m no highbrow art connoisseur, but I do know a thing or two about bags. I also know that a painterly motif can make for an invigorating way to liven up your wardrobe. Fashion’s visual arts trend has been gaining traction for quite some time, and I’m especially appreciating the latest crop of gallery-worthy pieces. From feathery brushstrokes to abstract doodles to picturesque landscapes to hand-drawn sketches, these bags may inspire you to get in touch with your own inner painter.

What bag would you buy if money was no object and practicality was of no consequence? I know I would leap for something altogether fanciful, heavy on whimsy and irreverence (and yes, heavy on the wallet, too). Like one of these seven clutches, each seemingly designed to help you elude reality for an evening or two – and light up your bag closet for years to come. Here, my current favorite crazy-unusual bags worth a mega-splurge because we could all use an escape every now and again.
