For his first turn at Balmain just a few months ago, Olivier Rousteing whisked us off for one night of decadence in Vegas. This spring, the whirlwind trip continues – and the man knows how to travel in style! Think something like a hard-partying tour of Europe, relaxing in low-slung pants and denim shirts by day and turning it out in beaded hot pants by night (actually, by day too! Standing out in the mix was a beaded, embellished hot pants suit for ladies who lunch – and go hardcore at the gym). Yes, it was hot pants galore – they are official the new skirts for the coming warm season.
With loose leather trousers and fringed jackets trimmed in Baroque-style detail, Balmain’s too-cool show-off has developed an appreciation for fine details, as opposed to bold sequins. Rousteing wants to remind us that Pierre Balmain created a “couture house” and he wants the current handiwork, even if it does have a wicked nonchalance to its luxury, to have made Pierre proud. It was beading over beading and more beading! With some high-waisted numbers thrown in the mix, along with structured toreador jackets, the Balmain girl has developed an air of sophistication – by her own unconventional standard of course. She’s feeling Marie Antoinette-decadent, and it’s quite becoming on her.
For all the opulence, the metallics, and the pure glitz, there was a clean look to the entire collection – like on looks with crisp white shirts serving as a foundation. Handling flash with finesse, Balmain is couture gone ferocious. I just hope you know how to work a pair of hot hot pants!
