Best Fall Trends: What to Fall for Right Now

I hosted a fall trends-themed shopping event over the weekend at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. Among plenty of bubbly and treats, guests and I got excited at the prospect of fresh staples, new must-haves, and unexpected revamps on the classics. I love the start of a new fall season, and for the fashion set, we don’t wait until the temperatures actually drop. The “new year” commences September 1st. In the spirit of shopping like a fashion insider and making a swift change into the next phase, here are some of my favorite trends of the season:

1. Folklorica
From whimsical embroidery to a smattering of sparkly studs to anything that exudes a bit of world-roaming eclecticism, accessories with a handcrafted feel is where it’s at. Opt for a piece that shakes up multiple materials and elements to inject a dash of ethereality into your look.

2. Last Layer: The Cape
Capes used to be strictly reserved for Little Red Riding Hood and superhero wannabes at Comic-Con. No more! Add a little bit of drama, combined with a nice dose of innocence, to your wardrobe, and you’ll instantly feel the power – and the coziness.

MSGM Chevron Printed Wool Cape (at Neiman Marcus for $680)

Milly Sculptural Wool-Blend Cape (at Neiman Marcus for $275)

3. Ear Candy
Lately, traditional earrings have been feeling so passé. Trade your gold hoops and diamond studs for something more offbeat – and possibly asymmetric. Crystal-coated cubes, geometric shapes, single earrings for a purposely mismatched look, and chunky pearls that most definitely didn’t come from grandma’s jewel box will have your lobes stealing the spotlight.

Vita Fede Pave Crystal Cube & Pearl Earrings (at Neiman Marcus for $775)

4. Flared Pants
Ditch those skinnies once and for all! Fall’s best pants are looking free and easy, with a retro silhouette that feels totally modern at the moment. Snug at the hips, flattering on the bum, and, of course, belled at the bottom: Whether in buttery suede or classic blue denim, dare to flare.

Alice + Olivia Suede Bell-Bottom Pants (at Neiman Marcus for $997)

FRAME Forever Karlie Flared-Leg Denim Jeans (at Neiman Marcus for $239)

5. ’70s Saddle Bags
The 1970s have been having a moment for, well, much longer than a moment. Don’t expect the decade to expire anytime soon. Get in touch with your sophisticated-bohemian side with a saddle bag that’s at once streamlined, rugged, and freewheeling. Think young Jane Birkin turned uptown girl.

6. White-Out: Winter Whites
Hello, creamy monochrome! I’ve always loved winter white for being the shade that turns the season on its head, and this year, reaching for all things snowy, vanilla, or ivory is particularly on the mark. Just be careful about getting actual marks on your precious whites.

Saint Laurent Monogram Medium Matelasse Shoulder Bag (at Neiman Marcus for $1,250)

3.1 Phillip Lim Soleil Large Drawstring Bucket Bag (at Neiman Marcus for $1,050)

7. Chunky Heels: Best Booties
Fall always warrants a new pair of boots. This time, ditch the dagger-pointed heels and pick up a pair of ankle boots with a chunky heel that allows you to really move. And remember, just because the heel may have some heft to it doesn’t mean your bootie should feel heavy. Think gorgeously simple with intriguing details.
