If you’re a fan of YouTube beauty tutorials, odds are you know about the talented Ms. Camila Coelho. MakeUpByCamila2 has well over half a million subscribers, and that’s not even including the ones keeping up with her Portuguese channel, which has about a million more! The Brazilian blogger was nice enough to answer a few of my questions and offer some Snob-exclusive tips…
What got you interested in makeup?
I have been super girly since I was little, and I knew that one day I wanted to work with something involving beauty/fashion. The moment I “discovered” makeup, I knew it was for me, so I became a makeup artist! My first job was with Dior. I started working the makeup counter at Macy’s.
Is there a makeup trend you just can’t stand?
The super dark (almost black) lipsticks never work for me. But I shouldn’t say I can’t stand it because it actually works for some people.
Why did you decide to create a YouTube channel?
As a makeup artist at the time, I started my channel as a hobby, with the idea of making easy how-to tutorials to show the girls (specifically my friends) how simple it can be to create a “pro” makeup/hair look at home And basically to have fun doing one of the things I love the most – Makeup!
What is unique about your beauty channel?
I try to be as specific and personal as possible in my videos/blog, so that my followers can relate to it. Also, I’m very connected to my readers. It is important for me to always be listening to them… I get a lot of emails and social media comments. It helps me to communicate with them. I know what they want to see and always love getting their feedback.
Who are your personal beauty inspirations?
Kim Kardashian is definitely a beauty queen for me. She always looks gorgeous in different and inspiring makeup and hair looks! I love her and I’m always anxious to see what she is going to wear to upcoming events!
What was the first makeup you ever used?
Red lipstick from my mom’s makeup collection when I was 5. Does that count?! The red lipstick is part of my history. I have many childhood photos wearing it, including my first passport picture! (Yes!)
What are some products you would recommend for girls who are just starting to wear makeup?
Heavy foundations/concealers can clog your pores faster. Try to avoid them and try alternatives. Some drug store brands can cause clogged pores and acne. BB cream is a perfect start for teenagers. It’s lightweight, natural and it actually takes care of your skin.
What are your top five makeup products?
My top five of the moment are:
1. Bioré Deep Pore charcoal cleanser
2. Caudalie Serum
3. Hoola blush/bronzer by Benefit (to contour)
4. Diorskin Forever foundation
5. LORAC TANtalizer body bronzing luminizer
Where is the place you find the best deals/sales?
I feel like it’s not easy to find makeup on sale, but my favorite stores are Sephora and Ulta Beauty. You can find everything from affordable to luxury products, and experts to help with decisions.
What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Wash my face with cold water, followed with my “Deep Pore charcoal cleanser” by Biore to deeply cleanse my skin. The days when I need to be photographed, film or go out in the morning, I use an ice trick to get rid of the “swollen sleepy face feel.”
I put ice in a Ziploc bag with a thin cotton towel around it (so that it doesn’t burn my skin) and I press it around my whole face for about 5-10 minutes! Your skin looks fresh and ready to go…no one will know that you just woke up.
Do you have any wacky/unusual beauty rituals?
Massaging my face, and doing mouth and brow movements. It looks super awkward but I do it when I am alone. Tricks from my Mom ❤
What is your favorite/go-to beauty trick?
The ice trick (that I described above) is one of my favorites, but contouring and highlighting has to be number one for me. I’m obsessed!!! I always contour my face a little, especially the nose and chin, and it makes such a big difference.
How much time do you spend on your everyday makeup routine? And on your going-out/special occasion makeup routine?
Doing my makeup everyday in the morning still feels like therapy to me, so I don’t rush it. I usually spend 30 minutes getting ready (with music on) but if I am in a rush I could an everyday makeup in five!
When was the last time you left home without a trace of makeup on?
I don’t remember (just kidding)! It was when I got my last facial. It’s rare for me to leave the house without makeup, at the least, I may apply concealer or BB cream.
What is the best beauty advice you have ever gotten?
Always love yourself within! Yes, we love makeup and getting dolled up, and it does help our self-esteem, but feeling good about the real you is what makes a difference at the end of the day! Being a good person and staying beautiful on the inside is the most important for me ❤
