If there’s one bag that could sum up Coachella, it’s the much maligned ‘bum bag/belt bag/fanny pack’ (yes we’ll admit, we love them, too!). Perfect with the onslaught of bohemian-hippy looks that famously occupy the two week festival, they also allow one’s hands free to hold plastic beer filled mugs and to take selfies- of utmost importance ’cause if you didn’t post it you didn’t live it.
Also, you probably know stylists are involved in your favorite celebrity’s getup (yes, celebs are not like us- they don’t dress themselves). If you want to maintain your relevance, you better be looking hot on your Insta timeline which is pretty much the only lens the world views (and judges) you by. But hey, we’re not complaining because in this increasingly connected world, it lets us partake in the (annoyingly) happy storm of Californian festival life, enjoying the mighty powers of Beyonce’s radiance and vibing to the acts on a spiritual (if only social) level.
Come take a look at some of our fave celebs and their desert bag styles:
Alessandra Ambrosia The Kooples Emily Belt Bag, $295
Supporting a friend’s bag design is easy when you authentically love it and wear it several times, as Alessandra Ambrosio has been doing with this Emily bag by the Kooples, in collaboration with (you guessed it) bestie Emily Ratajkowski. And.. it’s under $500. Score.
Amber Rose, Chanel Mini Bucket Bag
So, matching a lady like-bag from Chanel to a hair sweating event like Coachella can be expertly done in striking pink, as Amber acutely demonstrates. Didn’t you get the memo? Millennial pink is still hot. Similar bag here. Affordable option here. Chanel bucket in red here.
Alessandra Ambrosio GG Marmont matelassé leather belt bag, (available on Gucci for $1,100)
Here’s Alessandra Ambrosia again with a bag from, unarguably, the hottest designer brand right now. Brazilians love to dance and show off their hot bodies, and Alessandra is certainly not the exception (Can you tell?)
Nicole Richie Buji Baja Hat Attack bag (available on Shopbop, $112)
Throwback alert. Here’s Nicole Richie with this easy breezy looking straw bag at a VIP Coachella spin-off event (cropping up more and more) by Revolve. She’s placed on top of my mantle for which I’ll refer to as ‘reality star alumni to veritable fashionista’, giving her an A grade in fashion literacy (next to Kim Kardashian). You gotta love her relateability too.
Whitney Port, Marni Contrast Stripe Trunk Bag (available on Farfetch for $2,280)
Another throwback. I remember those days when I would watch LA reality show, The Hills, drinking in the life of being an intern at a fashion publication company. Naively, I thought that the main star Lauren Conrad was actually interning, when really, there was a quid pro quo situation happening. Of course I was going to follow Whitney’s journey in her own reality show, The City which sadly made me think there was a lot left to be desired concerning Whitney’s style (Sorry Whit). This re-imagined ice cream coloured blast from the past Trunk bag by Marni is a good pick though.
Rhianna in Gucci
We love you RiRi, please keep doing you. Scrolling through Instagram with a heaping mass of prettily – confected looks, it can get terribly same-y very quickly. I welcome and appreciate Rhianna’s jolt of difference to my eyes in my online fashion perusal. Her trick here is a replicated Gucci runway look from Fall 2018, with a new Gucci bag that we can’t get our hands on just yet.
Romee Strijd Valentino Small Spike Leather Belt Bag (White), $1375
There’s always a boatload of Victoria secret models and their Coachella experiences being documented, meaning more bag spotting fun. This time it’s another angel, another bum bag following from fellow angel Alessandra. Look how happy Romee is here, as if she’s gleefully boasting ‘I didn’t get my stuff stolen, all because of this bag!’. See? maybe they’re not as bad as you first thought.
Emily Ratajkowski Prada Cahier Straw and Leather Bag, $3,250
Here’s Emily herself, the mind-muse behind the Kooples bag, wearing a very tasteful ensemble and enjoying the same Revolve party as attended by Nicole Richie. At Prada.com
Olivia Culpo, Louis Vuitton Vintage Mini Montsouris Monogram Backpack (available on Farfetch for $3,248)
It wouldn’t be Coachella without style stars like Olivia Culpo, who kind of looks like she had fun visually arguing for the ‘more is more’ fashion appeal.
