Chanel Fall 2014 Collection: Supermarket Sweep

Chanel Fall 2014 Collection

Nobody understands the importance of showmanship as well as Karl Lagerfeld. For Fall 2014, he took us to market, and the once-in-a-lifetime Chanel Shopping Center experience was one that left all attendees reeling. Strolling into the Costco-sized big-box market made for a surreal moment, one that made me wonder to myself (and I was not alone!), “Where am I?” Was I shopping at the Super Target in Dallas or was I attending the Chanel Fall 2014 prêt-à-porter show in Paris?

The Grand Palais was transformed into an all-American shopping center during hectic weekend hours. Upon settling in, I helped myself to fresh strawberries and a banana. All the produce was fresh, and there were tasting stands on hand for coffee and fresh coconut milk samples. There was also a plethora of other items that would be commonplace just about anywhere else: toilet brushes, welcome mats, lentils, fresh oranges, candy…essentially, anything and everything your heart desired. At one point I was so over stimulated I didn’t know where to look.

I couldn’t help but think Mr. Lagerfeld was inspired by his recent trip to Dallas and its many shopping centers. But he insists he was inspired by Pop Art and Andy Warhol’s interpretation of mass-market culture.

Finally, the show kicked with models dressed to the nines while shopping, Cara Delevingne appearing first in Aisle 5 with holey, bubblegum-pink knit sweats. Again, it’s so very American to pull a Chanel coat over leggings and flashy sneakers (and leave your chunky, cushy headphones around your neck for convenience, as many of the following models did).

Chanel’s classic shapes have been re-imagined, with slender waists and big, billowing shoulders and sleeves for an allover looser fit with full, swingy skirts. The quintessential tweed suit will never be the same again. And that’s exactly what Karl is after. Glitter! Shine! Holographics! Flash! Pastels with panache! Confetti-like cocktails of color to put a carnival to shame! As soon as the looks poured out, courtesy of models milling about (some pushing carts and others merely browsing the aisles), it was easy to ignore the fully stocked “store.” Silhouettes with casual ease were set off with crop tops, low-slung chain belts, and head-to-toe coordination that Cher Horowitz would go mad for. High-gloss trench coats to hide away in and equally oversized padlock pendants make the statement more is more.

The same goes for the dazzling array of accessories: these are the most creative bags I’ve seen from Chanel in a long time. From leather and chain-trimmed grocery baskets to kaleidoscopic hue-packed prints to plastic-wrapped burgundy shoulder bags that let you have your designer steak and carry it, too.

Basically, it encompassed a morning in my life as a mom, except in Paris and the groceries were Chanel-brand. To make matters even more surreal, an announcement was made after the show, instructing “shoppers” to help themselves to candy and fruits. We took it literally and people tried to cart off with everything from Chanel ketchup bottles to cookie tins. It was by far the most fun I have ever had a fashion show, trumping that of the Paris-meets-Dallas drive-in extravaganza a few months ago. Chanel doesn’t just give you beautiful clothes and fabulous handbags, they also donated every remaining item from the supermarket to charity. Witty, clever, and mind-bending, when Chanel says shop ‘til you drop, we do!
