Derek Lam Fall 2013 Collection: Free Spirit

Derek Lam Fall/Winter 2013 Runway Looks

I’m something of a Derek Lam girl through and through, and is it hard to see why? One look at his Fall 2013 collection, and his effortless aesthetic screams, “Wear me! Wear me!” As always, everything Derek does feels impossibly easy. Nothing is ever too tight, too primped, or forced.

From the double-face wool-cashmere coats to bouclé capes to the skirts, one-part boxy and two-parts free-flowing, I’m feeling a strong ‘70s vibe from a particularly carefree Derek (he even grew his hair out again). If you don’t see it at first glance, look again. With funky fringes and geometric patchworks, the Sammy Davis jive is undeniable. Though it’s not obvious, and neither are the garments. Some look like dresses but are actually functional separates. Derek makes the chicest yet most wearable tops (it’s so hard to find good tops to wear with everything, without resorting to T-shirts or super-fancy wares). Speaking of which, a collection favorite, worn by favorite Chinese model Liu Wen: a color- and texture-blocked rayon top of black and ecru, paired with a leather-and-suede skirt.

I find myself in his clothes day-in and day-out, whether for fashion meetings or volunteering at school lunches. So with all his shows, I concentrate (save the Tweeting/Instagraming after the show) and make a mental list of my personal orders for the season. I can’t wait to take a cue from the runway and mix his skirts, in white leather or suede python, with gleaming lace-up booties – and don’t forget the bonded-leather Bodin bag. I’m putting the satin cape-blouse on personal order ASAP. Come fall, I’ll be a cape-sporting Derek girl!
