Design through the Decades: The 2010s

Design through the Decades

Okay, we’re not even halfway through the decade, so there are certainly more trends to come! But we already spotted quite a few, ranging from vampy cutout shoes to simple ballet flats. It seems that we’ve finally learned to mix style and comfort. There’s a little something for everyone, whether you like a bird’s eye view atop skyscraper heels or prefer to stay grounded. Which is your favorite style?

Smoking Slippers
Charles Philip Shanghai Satin Leopard Print Smoking Slipper:icon I would be remiss to mention smoking slippers and leave out Charles Philip. He’s largely responsible for their popularity, and with fall’s animal print trend, these are the slippers to slip into! At Bergdorf Goodman for $160.

Peep-Toe Booties
Burberry Peep Toe Booties:icon Booties hit the big-time in the ‘10s, and when you cover up so much, a little peep-toe pop is just the right thing (pedicure required!). At Bloomingdale’s for $750.

Ballet Flats
Repetto Cendrillon Glossed-Leather Ballet Flats:icon If you’re going to sport ballet flats, it’s best to go straight to the source. Repetto has been making dancing shoes since the ‘40s. On NET-A-PORTER for $295.

Ankle Boots
Chloé Studded Python Ankle Boots:icon This super studded shoe is one of the most popular boots of the year and the epitome of the decade’s beloved style – low-heeled comfort. On NET-A-PORTER for $1,750.

Cutout Shoes
Alejandro Ingelmo Ariposa Pump:icon This is one of the trendiest of the bunch, and it’s also the most fun. Alejandro is the master of crazy, sexy cutouts, and this pair of pumps (inspired by butterflies) is one of his most exciting. On Farfetch for $1,005.

Novelty Shoes
Charlotte Olympia Pumps:icon I might as well have labeled this section “Charlotte Olympia.” Brit designer Charlotte Dellal is the Queen of Kitsch, so it only makes sense for her to create shoes fit for queens – Rapunzelicon ($1,472.69) and Sleeping Beautyicon ($856.95) to be exact! On Farfetch.
