At the risk of sounding like a total moron because of the devastating fires that are destroying California, I had no idea just how dry California really is until I went a few weeks ago. Immediately upon landing – which granted was after a 16-hour flight from Tel Aviv – I began to feel like my skin was about to breakout, which it always does when the humidity level drops. I always sleep with a humidifier in these cases because it often gets so bad that my nose will bleed in the morning (Boneco is the best), being in LA for just two days, however, that wasn’t an option. But that brings me to rule number one: get a humidifier!!! It’s one of the most underrated beauty essentials. If you get a good one, like pretty much any model Boneco, just one night of sleeping with it will improve the texture of your skin.
Rule two: get a facial! I was lucky that the first meeting I had in LA was with a woman who told me about Heyday. They have locations in LA and NYC and do both customized facials and have a curated shop of products. I’m not a big facial person because my skin is so sensitive but I was assured they would be using 100% oil-free products. Because they have a retail component they’re not loyal to just one line of products like most facial spots are. I immediately headed over for a facial and it saved me from cracking skin for the rest of my two-day trip.
While there I also discovered two product lines I’ve since become obsessed with: Alchimie Forever and IMAGE Skincare.
My facial was done mostly with Alchimie Forever products and there were two standouts. The Antioxidant Skin Repair Gel and Pigment Lightening Serum (note this one does have some oil in it, but it was fine on my skin which I can’t stress enough, breaks out very easily). I’ve been using both since and they’ve become two favorites. They’re so effective! All the way on the top of this post you’ll see an image of their Moisture Mask, which I haven’t used at home yet (it was used during my facial), but I’m sure will come in handy as we get deep into winter.
Another piece of the puzzle is a good lip product. I usually swear by Blistex’s ointment. It’s not a sexy product, but it works. I’ve finally found something that’s not only more aesthetically pleasing, but is even more effective – IMAGE’s lip balm. Again, this has oil but I’m not worried about breaking out on my lips so I’ve been slathering this on and it does a great job at both treating and preventing dry lips. Most balms make your lips feel better in the moment, but make them drier in the long run. I’ve been using this since my facial at Heyday in mid November and haven’t experienced this. Pure, blissful, non-sticky hydration. You know it’s a winner when your husband doesn’t say “eww, what’s on your lips”…
The last piece: a fantastic hand cream. It’s an oldie, but I still have yet – in years and years – to find anything better than the Shea Butter one from L’Occitane.
