Insane Shoe Sale at Barneys!

You must get to a Barneys asap– almost the entire shoe department is 40% off! I’m talking YSL (except the tribute), Pierre Hardy, Jil Sanders, and LOUBOUTINS! Look at these shoes, it’s insane! I was in there this weekend and snatched up a pair of gray/platinum platforms that I’ve been looking at all season– so glad I waited! I am a bit worried and think retailers and designers have to rethink their brands and strategies…. They can’t continue the insane sales, no one will pay full retail anymore if they do. Furthermore, It de-values the products and alienates core clients. I’m upset because the Marni and Ysl shoes I bought full price are now on sale and I haven’t even worn them. This makes me tell myself to wait for sale next season… And hence the snowball effect. We are living in precarious times, my friends. And don’t think the bargains now aren’t going to cost you later, I’m expecting crazy inflation in our very near future. Just curious, how do you shop now?

How do you shop? Full price or sale?(survey software)

i agree tina. plus it doesn’t help the way that they line up ALL the shoes they have and put it all over the store. reminds me of payless or other stores who allow their customers to get their own shoes (not that there is anything wrong with stores like that but it should not be the message that barneys sends out). definitely cheapens the brand.

I agree…it’s hard to justify paying full price for anything but the classics these days! A chanel 2.55 won’t go on sale, but everything else seems to. At the very least, I always wait for a ‘friends and family’ sale to buy most clothes and shoes.

Prices may go up, but it won’t be soon bc the economy has not rebounded. I do think the discounting has really changed the game. Seeing dresses that I puchased for 2k+ being sold on gilt 2-3 months later has stopped me from buying from certain brands until the sale. I like how Oscar does the sales: usually one markdown late in the season so happy hunting if you wait. This approach cultivates loyalty. Like the other poster said, there are very few things that I have to or will pay full price for. It really pays to wait. I don’t think this season will have the same crazy discounting that we saw in 08 bc there is less inventory

Finally, I have cultivated some pretty good relationships with sales people at my favorite stores, which has helped me tremendously to understand what to buy now or wait for later

A lot of high end retailers have reduced inventory this year in order to avoid the huge sales of last year. It turns out, nothing makes us buy at full price like scarcity. Saks is actually selling out of higher end items at full price because they limited their inventory and higher-end designers do not do second runs of production. I wonder if Barneys just didn’t pick inventory wisely and thus has so much to put on sale.

you have no idea how lucky you are that almost all year long you have some kind of sales: family&friends, black friday, cyber monday, your end of the season starts before xmas and new years – here in Europe it’s a whole different story! end of the season sales start in january and end of july, and we have no any other type of sales. now that the economy it’s not that high rise, it’s really hard to look at store displays. plus, we have the culture of boutiques but very few department stores and it’s logic that boutiques hardly ever make “discounts” – not to mention high end boutiques that carry balmain, gucci, prada, miu miu and so on..they never ever make sales, they can take 10% off at the counter if you’re a loyal customer..but sometimes you don’t even walk in some kind of shops…i am glad that the crisis has reshaped the whole world, don’t get me wrong, i’m a fashion addict, but please some prices were absolutely crazy and out of nowhere..feel happy that you can afford to buy such expensive things, some people can’t even get to the next paycheck! so please stop complaining and enjoy your sales snobs!
