Camera Clutches: Picture This

Camera Clutches

As much as I love my iPhone (maybe too much, in fact!), I’ve been making a point to lug around my Canon Rebel t5i as of late. When it comes to capturing special moments like my boy’s drama performance and piano recital, I want the images to be crisp and clear; and while smart phone cameras have come a long way, poor lighting can keep even the most sophisticated of iPhone photographers from getting that once-in-a-lifetime, split-second shot.

No, sometimes there’s just nothing like the real thing…unless it’s a bag that looks just like the real thing! I don’t always go for Kate Spade kitsch, but this gleaming Perspex cross body (complete with “Steal the Spotlight” subtly printed on the lens cap) toes the line perfectly between fun and frivolous, especially at a time of year when our shutterbug sensibilities are in high gear. Don’t be surprised is someone mistakes your box clutch for a real camera and asks for a photo! Whether you want to fool them into thinking they’re right or set them straight is up to you – and whether you’re naughty or nice.

Judith Lieber’s Austrian crystal-encrusted minaudière, on the other hand, will be more likely confused as a piece of art before an actual camera – and with a price tag of almost $6K, it’s also much more expensive than the average one. If you can’t splurge during the holidays, though, when can you? A sparkly, wearable ornament like this is just the kind I want to carry to ring in the season. Kate Spade New York cross body available on Shopbop ($398) and Judith Leiber minaudièreicon at Neiman Marcus ($5,595).
