Lanvin Sugar Mini Quilted Suede Shoulder Bag vs. Roger Vivier Prismick Bag: Look-Alike of the Week

Lanvin Sugar Mini Quilted Suede Shoulder Bag vs. Roger Vivier Prismick Bag

Is imitation really the highest form of flattery? Or is it just plain annoying. When I happened upon Lanvin’s Sugar version of the Roger Vivier Prismick bag, I thought to myself, “Oh, Roger Vivier is reissuing my Prismick shoulder bag in the exact same color. How odd and unoriginal.” A few seconds later I saw another version and thought, “Well, this is cuter,” but I then noticed it was labeled Lanvin. A double-take and a “WTF?” (out-loud) ensued.

You see, I have the original Roger Vivier Prismick shoulder bag in luscious, aubergine suede. It’s a favorite of mine, so I am kind of taking it personally. The only apparent difference is Vivier’s geometric Prismick pattern, a distinct style that was born out of Roger’s love of collages. One could argue the Sugar is merely an iteration of the hugely popular Hero bag, but that angle is not going to fly with me. A coincidence this could be, but I doubt it. The Sugar debuted in the Pre-Fall collection of 2014. I’ve had my Prismick since 2013. See? I win.

Okay, joking aside, if we want to really get into it, we can go back even further and note Coco Chanel was the first to do quilted bags, after she was inspired by the tiles on the floor of the orphanage run by nuns where she grew up. Then again, this isn’t a case of merely reminiscent quilting. This is way too similar for my comfort. Remember what Picasso said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” It comes down to inspiration versus imitation. What do you think the case is here?
