Olsenmania: It Takes Two to Make a Thing Go Right

Mary-Kate Olsen at the Weeds Premiere in 2007 wearing Alaïa and American Apparel

They have been spurring and standing up to trends for years now (despite the fact they’re only 25), and I am currently major style-crushing on the Olsen twins. Their look is effortlessly laidback yet calculated to accentuate their petite frames (yes, I do feel kinship due to our mutual height – or lack thereof!).

I don’t have style icons, but I have always obsessed over Carine and Kate. Now I can add Mary-Kate and Ashley to that elite list. Here, my favorite three looks from MK and Ashley through the years:

1. The look that launched a major love for the Olsens: At the Weeds premiere back in 2007, Mary Kate looked genius with a high-low mix of elegant and casual, by making worlds collide with an Alaïa skirt and American Apparel tee, then savvily adding Balenciaga shoes and the YSL muse bag. And then I fell in style love…Sexy without giving a damn!

2. Victorian lace will never look the same: Attending a charity gala in 2010, Ashley donned Alexander McQueen the way it’s meant to be worn: with vixenish lips, a proper updo, and uncompromising confidence.

3. Apparently getting cozy doesn’t mean sacrificing chic: At the premiere of little-sis Elizabeth’s flick, Marcy Martha May Marlene, the duo knew how to let their sibling shine without entirely forfeiting the spotlight. Contrasting chubby cropped furs against jet blacks and brocades equals cool you can’t argue with.

4. Vintage takes on a whole new meaning: At the 2011 Met Gala, they both showed us how to deliver vintage with true finesse. Ashley donned a Christian Dior gown with Christian Louboutin Pigalle pumps and Mary-Kate wore crimson Givenchy. They both accessorized with Judith Leiber clutches and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels.
