How to pick sunscreen based on your skin type

When it comes to skincare products there’s one thing I look for above all else and that’s that they are “oil free” – including my SPF products which is why I swear by Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF30 ($30). You probably already know that you need sunscreen year-round (UVA rays – the cancer and aging rays – are just as strong in the winter as they are in the summer) and that there is a wide range when it comes to sunscreen consistency and feel, but beyond that there are specific things you should look for when buying sunscreen for your skin type. Because not everyone’s main concern is preventing breakouts, I turned to dermatologist and founder of DermWarehouse, Dr. Alan Parks to get his top picks. And remember we need to be wearing sunscreen even when we jump out for some quick errands… those minutes in the sun add up!

Normal/All Skin Types:
“For normal/all skin types I would recommend the SkinMedica Total Defense + Repair SPF 34. This is a broad spectrum sunscreen, but the really special thing about this product is that in addition to offering UVA/UVB protection, it also offers infared protection and was the first sunscreen to protect against these rays which are the most damaging. The SPF 34 is a product that should be added to everyone’s daily routine. It also comes in a tinted version and an SPF 50 water resistant version.” On a side note I wanted to single out Tetra fx250 – Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen, which is another option for infared protection and Volition Prismatic Luminizing Shield SPF 50 because it goes on really easy, which is especially important for men who aren’t used to lathering their faces in skincare products.
Oily Skin:
“The La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Ultra-light Sunscreen Lotion is great for more oily skin, as it’s oil-free and very light. This is a broad spectrum SPF 60 sunscreen and was developed with a reduced number of ingredients for optimal skin tolerance. “
Dry Skin:
“Avène Hydrating Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+ FACE & BODY is a smooth, creamy sunscreen for the face and body with broad spectrum SPF 50+ protection. It’s a more hydrating sunscreen so would be good for dry skin.”
Combination Skin:
“COOLA Classic Face Sunscreen SPF 30 is a non-greasy formula designed for all skin types and would work well for combination skin.”
Acne-prone Skin:
“CōTZ FLAWLESS COMPLEXION SPF 50 provides blemish free sun protection for teens & adults. It’s non-comedogenic and non-oily/non-greasy, so it’s perfect for acne-prone skin.”

For Baby Skin:
For any mothers out there I just wanted to also single out ABC Arbonne Baby Care Sunscreen SPF 30. It’s unscented and goes on smooth.
