A two-tone spectator style that exudes a sleek, contemporary spirit with a healthy dose of classicism: This is my favorite version of the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour. For me, Saint Laurent, under Hedi Slimane’s reign, succeeds best when they avoid the flash and trendiness and keep the overall effect timeless.
In simple black, the Sac de Jour reads eerily like a Birkin. In black paneled with deep, muted gray, it’s got a personality of its own and looks far more polished than a tote colorblocked in deliberately clashing colors.
While the palette charms me, the bag’s genius lies in its expandable accordion gusset. Not only does the detail give it unusual visual flair, it allows the top-handle tote to function like a chic filing cabinet with seemingly unlimited space. Along with a detachable shoulder strap, it’s much more functional than the Birkin by which it was inspired. On NET-A-PORTER for $3,150.
Pair with: When your bag airs on the classic side, you can have offbeat fun with other accessories, like your sunglasses. In graduated horn with color-pop lenses, Illesteva’s Leonard frames help you get your fix. At Barneys New York for $177.
