Spring ’16 Trend Alert: The Matching Game

Spring ’16 Trend Alert

A trend we first saw for the Fall ’15 season is destined to continue full-steam ahead into spring. Once reserved for our grandmothers and old-fashioned types, coordinating your gutsy print with your bag or shoes (or both!) reveals the cool side of going matchy-matchy. The result is purposeful and high-impact, whether you’re doubling up on a surrealist motif or a seriously geometric pattern.

Just look at the latest Spring ’16 runway looks from New York and London Fashion Weeks. Marc Jacobs delivered a wickedly wild take on Maria Callas’ portrait, via a jewel-encrusted screen print, while Christopher Kane played with plentiful tufts of brightly-colored fringe on both his colorblocked dresses and swingy bags. If you’re feeling really daring, look to J.W. Anderson’s wacked-out takes on a Keith Haring-esque squiggle print, via puffed-out sleeves and messenger bags. Or go for a more approachable vintage throwback; the flirty floral separates from Marques Almeida are equal parts sweet and sassy. Finally, my favorite corresponding combo just might be Anya Hindmarch’s super-bold, retro-inspired graphics, as seen on her pullover sweaters, knee-high boots, and top-handle totes.
