Today officially marks the first day of the Year of the Monkey! My son was born in the Year of the Golden Monkey, so I’m naturally biased towards this sign. Monkeys are most creative and intelligent, and they’re also known for being playful, enthusiastic, and highly social. This is the Year of the Red Fire Monkey, and it’s being said anything can happen in 2016, particularly when it comes to personal endeavors. Might I suggest acquiring a new bag as your first personal endeavor of the new year?

After a year of great collaborations (Rag & Bone! Mark Cross! Derek Lam!), I’m closing out the year with Barbie and Vogue China. As a little girl, I loved Barbie and had everything from Barbie's Dreamhouse to her mobile home with a pool on the roof deck. It’s been so much fun to reunite with my childhood bestie! In time for New Year’s Eve, she has a miniaturized version of our Audrey jewel box, perfect for a glam night out with Ken and friends. (Note the Asian Barbie in my honor. Wish we had these when we were kids!) Read on for more bags you’ll want by your side when you welcome in the New Year – and that you’ll want to keep carrying for the rest of 2016.

As much as I love my iPhone (maybe too much, in fact!), I’ve been making a point to lug around my Canon Rebel t5i as of late. When it comes to capturing special moments like my boy’s drama performance and piano recital, I want the images to be crisp and clear; and while smart phone cameras have come a long way, poor lighting may keep even the most sophisticated of iPhone photographers from getting that once-in-a-lifetime, split-second shot.

For all the whimsy and bedazzlement the holidays bring, there’s a flip side to the festivities. We want our stockings to be stuffed with glamorous goodies and sophisticated little somethings, but for every item that’s easy on the eyes, there’s a bag that makes for a mild attack on the senses. Here, my pick of the bags you ought to watch out for in case you’ve been very bad this past year...

What bag would you buy if money was no object and practicality was of no consequence? I know I would leap for something altogether fanciful, heavy on whimsy and irreverence (and yes, heavy on the wallet, too). Like one of these seven clutches, each seemingly designed to help you elude reality for an evening or two – and light up your bag closet for years to come. Here, my current favorite crazy-unusual bags worth a mega-splurge because we could all use an escape every now and again.
