Trend Report: NYFW Spring 2014

Trend Report

After a whirlwind week in NYC, I finally have some time to sit down and collect my thoughts. First I prepared a mental checklist of everything on my wish list, but now it’s on to the trends! Which ones stuck out to you? Here are the styles I expect to see hitting the streets come spring…

Trend Report

Black and White
This season will be all about simplicity – starting fresh after a purifying winter. That’s not to say we have to throw out older trends. Last spring’s graphic black and white will survive the winter chill, and I can’t say I’m disappointed! From Ralph Lauren’s monochrome florals to The Row’s stripes to Derek Lam and Tracy Reese’s checks, there’s a print and pattern to satisfy every whim.

Sheer Insets
Spring may have us stripping out of our tights and sweaters, but that doesn’t mean we have to take it all off. Sheer is the best way to show skin while the frost is still thawing.

Fringe
The Great Gatsby took over fashion this year, so maybe the ‘20s style revival is to thank for the fringe trend. Rodarte and Marchesa did it best, though in different ways. Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig kept it ladylike, while the Mulleavy sisters took their inspiration from L.A.’s cool crowd.

Crop Tops
Still haven’t given crop tops a chance? Well when Narciso Rodriguez takes the plunge, you know it’s time to do the same. Play it safe with a blazer thrown over the shoulder or go all in à la Alexander Wang.

Embellished Sweatshirts
Sweatshirts for spring? When they’re sheer like Phillip Lim’s, it’s easy to justify. Marc Jacobs ties him for most creative with embroidery, appliqués, and tassels longer than most haircuts!

Athletic Wear
Athletic-inspired looks were everywhere and in every form from DKNY‘s casual t-shirts and baseball caps to Rag & Bone’s preppy tennis skirts and V-neck sweaters to Jason Wu’s glammed up jumpsuits (imagine sequins for days!).
