Why wellness experts are buzzing about coconut aminos

If you’re a regular shopper at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods you’ve probably seen a stack of Coconut Aminos bottles next to the selection of Soy Sauce. Bragg is the leader in the space because their offering is one of the cleanest, non-GMO options and the price point is affordable. So what exactly is coconut aminos? It basically looks and tastes just like soy sauce (though it’s a bit milder and slightly sweeter), but with significantly less salt (usually about 1/3 of the amount in soy sauce). It’s made from organic coconut tree nectar and sea salt. And no, surprisingly, it doesn’t taste like coconut at all! That said, while it’s a lot lower in salt than soy sauce, it’s not a low salt food so that should be kept in mind when sprinkling it into stir-frys and other dishes.

Coconut Aminos are often compared with Liquid Aminos, another popular soy sauce alternative, but the two are actually very different. Liquid Aminos is made with soybeans and purified water meaning while both options are gluten-free, Liquid Aminos is not appropriate for those looking to avoid soy. It also tends to be higher in salt that its Coconut counterpart.

As mentioned, even though Coconut Aminos are increasingly being referred to as a healthy food because the coconut sap in their ingredient list is rich in 17 different types of amino acids, they’re not actually that healthy, but rather a healthier alternative. Why? “Each of these amino acids works together as your building blocks of protein, promoting your levels of energy and muscle repair,” says Emma Hulse, Splendid Spoon‘s in-house registered dietician. “It also contains amazing minerals like potassium, which is necessary for muscular function and digestion.” So next time you’re grocery shopping skip their soy sauce and consider trying some Bragg!
